A Casual Chat About Digital Printing and Traditional Printing
Jan 14,2025

Digital printing does not require plate making (no matter the printing of one meter of cloth or one sheet of paper).

Traditional printing must make plates (plate making not only costs money, but also takes time, so it is impossible for traditional printing to deliver on the same day of ordering, or to deliver on the next day of ordering day). If the order is too small or not big enough, the printing fee may not be able to recover the cost of plate making, so the traditional printing will abandon some orders.

Let’s take textbooks or reading materials for example: if 2,000-3,000 copies are printed at a time, digital and traditional printing are similar (comprehensive evaluation of production capacity and cost), but if 5000 copies are printed at a time, traditional printing is definitely more suitable, but if 1~10~100 copies are printed at a time, digital printing must be suitable, and there is no need to press a large amount of inventory, and the production schedule can be adjusted flexibly.
For costs of large amount printing, digital printing has no advantages at present (maybe it will not have any advantages in the future).
Due to different national conditions, market demands and customer groups are also different. Digital printing is suitable for small orders and fast-delivery orders, which is the characteristic of digital printing.

Those who do not have digital printing equipment cannot use inkjet inks (To be precise, I mean inkjet printing equipment, because electrostatic toner printers also belong to digital printers). Compared with electrostatic toner printers, the advantage of inkjet printers is that the consumables cost of inkjet printers is lower, and the production capacity of some printing materials is higher, while the disadvantage is that the material adaptability range is not as wide as toner printers (take coated paper for example, there is no good inkjet printing solution at present. In addition, coated paper can be printed well at digital inkjet proofing, mass-production is difficult now).
The most common toner machine in printing shops can print 60-120 sheets of A4 coated paper in one minute; but the inkjet digital proofing can only print about 5 square meters (80 A4 sheets) in one hour, the production capacity gap is at least 60 times. But if it is to print one ordinary A4 copy paper, the production capacity of the inkjet printer can be 3-10 times that of the toner machine, and the ink cost and toner cost per sheet of paper can be 1:5 or 1:10. The current maximum speed of the toner machine is 80-100 meters/minute, while the current maximum speed of the inkjet rotary machine is 180 meters/minute, and the traditional printing machine can easily reach 300 meters/minute.

Carton paper printing belongs to the category of packaging paper printing.
Bopp and other plastic soft films are flexible packaging materials, its printing belongs to soft packaging printing.
Carton paper or corrugated card inkjet printing currently cannot achieve both good printing effect and large production capacity (either poor quality or very low speed).
HongJet latex ink printing solution is excellent for proofing, but is not suitable for mass production. It is estimated that it will take more than 10 years for domestic inkjet printing technology to reach mass production on corrugated card inkjet printing (Japan digital inkjet equipment solution is OK now, but the equipment costs more than 3 million USD, ink costs more than 100 USD/kilogram, and the speed is only 50 meters per minute).

Another advantage of digital printing is that there is no need to press a large amount of inventory (For example, a writer wants to publish a book in traditional printing. After making the plate, the business of printing 100,000 copies is negotiated with the printing factory. The unit price is also negotiated based on 100,000 copies. It only takes a few days for the printing factory to produce it, but no one can predict the market. The writer may not sell 100,000 copies in 2 years. If the writer only sells 10,000 copies a year, the rest 90,000 copies have to be stored in the warehouse by themselves, or they have to spend money to put them in the printing factory, it is inventory pressure).

For inkjet printing, if you place an order today, the product will be delivered tomorrow. The response speed is fast. For example, you can print 5,000 copies today, if it is popular and sells well, you can print another 10,000 copies tomorrow; if it is not popular, just stop production.
